In a remarkable journey that bridges centuries of maritime history, the ship Restauration set sail from Stavanger, Norway, on July 4th, embarking on a voyage that will arrive in New York City on October 9th. This voyage is part of the prestigious Crossings200 project, celebrating 200 years of transatlantic crossings and emigration from Norway to the United States.

A Voyage Rooted in History

On July 4th, 1825, a group of 52 Norwegians set sail on the original ship Restauration to make the first organized migration from Norway to North America. Since that first voyage, about 900,000 people have followed, leaving their homes in search of opportunities and a better life. While many returned to Norway, most stayed and built a new home in the New World. Today nearly five million people in North America claim Norwegian ancestry.

This painting of the sloop Selen is the closest we get to a picture of the Restauration because that sloop was never actually depicted. Most later illustrations of Restauration have been modeled on this painting.

The ¨new¨ Restauration is a historic vessel that embodies the spirit of early 18th-century seafaring. Built with a focus on authenticity and tradition, the ship aims to recreate the classic Atlantic crossing, offering passengers and enthusiasts a rare glimpse into maritime history. As it departs from Stavanger, a city known for its maritime heritage, the ship carries with it the rich cultural and nautical legacy of Norway.

The Crossings200 Initiative

Crossings commemorates 200 years of organized Norwegian migration to North America and two centuries of transatlantic crossings, highlighting the evolution of maritime travel and the enduring human spirit of exploration. The voyage of the Restauration is a symbolic journey that connects past and present, emphasizing the importance of maritime heritage in shaping global history.

It’s a year to celebrate the strong ties between Norway, the United States, and Canada. It’s an opportunity to remember what it means to take great risks and trade one home for another. And it’s a chance to better understand the movement of peoples that continues worldwide today.
